چکیده

Wood smoke is increasingly being seen as an important component of airborne particulate matter (PM). As the new short time standard for PM10 – particles in ambient air, of 50 μgm, set by the European Union (EU-Directive 1999/30/EG) is frequently violated in most urban regions in Europe, we have to find effective measures to reduce these concentration levels. This requires detailed knowledge of the magnitudes of individual source contributions (Puxbaum et al., 2004). Therefore the AQUELLA – project was started in Austria, using a chemical mass balance (CMB) – receptor model as source apportionment technique (Watson, 1984). This calls for chemical profiles of the source materials. Additionally, a macro tracer model has been developed within the AQUELLA Project, which uses single numerical factors for each characteristic compound, in each of the source materials being considered. Ideally, these are compounds that are known to be emitted by only one source. Levoglucosan has been recommended as a single tracer for the PM10 source "wood combustion" (Simoneit et al., 1999). This study focuses on domestic wood combustion, which is thought to be a major source of particulate emissions in Europe to the north of the Alps. The aim was to characterise the wood smoke emitted in Austria, to obtain a chemical profile of the fine particles (PM10), and if possible, factors for individual macro-trace markers. Large (30 cm) pieces of beech, oak, spruce, larch and softwood briquettes were burned in a closed domestic stove, and samples of the particulate emissions were analysed for trace metals, ions, carbon species, anhydrosugars and other trace organics, plus cellulose and HULIS.

A series of source tests was conducted to determine the chemical composition of fine particle emissions from the fireplace combustion of six species of woods grown in the northeastern United States: red maple, northern red oak, paper birch, eastern white pine, eastern hemlock, and balsam fir. Results include fine particle emission rates for total mass, organic and elemental carbon, ionic specie...

Fine Particle Emissions from Residual Fuel Oil Combustion: Characterization and Mechanisms of Formation

The characteristics of particulate matter (PM) emitted from residual fuel oil combustion in two types of combustion equipment were compared. A small commercial 732 kW rated fire-tube boiler yielded a weakly bimodal particulate size distribution (PSD) with over 99% of the mass contained in a broad coarse mode and only a small fraction of the mass in an accumulation mode consistent with ash vapor...

Changes in Fine PM Pollution Levels with Tightening of Regulations on Vehicle Emissions

A long-term campaign for monitoring the concentration of atmospheric Particulate Matter (PM) was conducted at multiple sites located in the center and suburbs of the Tokyo Metropolitan Area in Japan. The concentration of fine PM has shown a declining trend over the last two decades. A positive matrix factorization model elucidated that the contribution of combustion sources was drastically redu...

Chemical characterisation of particle emissions from burning leaves

Particulate matter emissions (PM10) from open-air burning of dry leaves were sampled and analysed for a series of organic and inorganic species, including carbon fractions, anhydrosugars, humic-like substances (HULIS), water-soluble ions, metals and organic trace components. The study was performed to investigate whether open-air burning of leaves in rural areas is a potential source of high am...
